According to the NCVS (National Crime Victim Survey), there is a cornucopia of reasons for the victimization experienced by victims. These include gender, race ethnicity, age and economic characteristics to name a few. In addition, other forms of victimological causation, would include (victim perpetuated crimes). For example, when a person initiates a violent encounter and gets his clocked cleaned by the unprovoked party, a clear case of culpability by the victim is apparent.

According to the text, Intro to Criminology, the person who created the term Victimology, (Benjamin Mendelson) delves into relationships of the victim to the offender. Mendelson classifies how the relationship evolves, or rather devolves into the victim’s promulgating the victimization process. As a law enforcement officer, I have encountered as scenarios with victims who were the totally at fault, as well as, with victims who were, what I call, true victims. For the most part, there is usually some relation with the victim and the suspect. Whether it be the clerk, who gets cussed out by the customer she has trespassed from the Dollar General, or the school teacher that is assaulted by a violent student The victimization process in these cases ,are not always determined by any typology or etiology, that is revealing on the surface, however after interviewing the victim, and offender, the inter sectional prospect of victim and offender becomes contemporaneous with the typology .

The best coping mechanism for victims internally would be to establish more empowerment through facing the fear of the victimization. For example, talking to others who have experienced similar events to determine sustainable strategies of coping. Externally, establish a physical environment that will prevent or discourage similar events. For instance, the victim of a stalking suspect, who she met the at a bar out of her immediate locale should avoid going back to the same bar where the suspect is seen frequently. In all cases where the victim has some relation with the offender, I advise the victim to avoid all contact with the offender.
