Throughout this course, you will be designing a Counseling Group from start to finish. The assignment will be broken into four parts, which are due at different intervals in the course. For the three-part assignment, choose from the following group types (If you are in the addiction counseling program, select an addiction group):

Children of divorce
Children of addicts
Adult Survivors of abuse (could be sexual or physical)
Treatment for adults who are addicts
Grief recovery
Teens struggling with gender dysphoria (sexual identity)
Teen support group (parents who are addicts)
Relationship building (homosexual and heterosexual – there does not have to be a division because a group is a group)
Domestic violence group for nonoffenders
Parenting group
Identify what type of group you will design by selecting one of the group types listed above.

Write a 750-word summary of your selected group.

Week 4 PART A

Assignment #3: PCN-520 Group Design Part Two: Brochure (Obj. 4.3)
In many instances, it may be necessary to advertise your group as a method to draw in new members. For this assignment, you need to develop a brochure (one page front and back with graphics and descriptions) that will “sell” your group as indicated in Group Design Part One to the public.

The brochure should be written to apply to a wide variety of people as it should be available in various locations around your community (e.g., schools, doctor’s offices, human services offices, restaurants, agencies serving the population of the group). Complete this assignment in Microsoft Word.

To design your brochure, use the templates in Microsoft Office Publisher or any alternative word processing program. If you do not have these programs, you can use the online template resources on the Word Automation website. Omit/delete items on templates that do not pertain to assignment criterion. Keep in mind that only .doc, .docx, .eps, .htm, .pdf, .rtf, .txt, or .wpd files are accepted, with file size not to exceed 10 MB.

Week 4 PART B

Assignment #4: PCN-520 Group Design Part Three: Screening Questions (Obj. 4.3)
As your group grows and considers how to generate new members, you also need to consider how new members will be selected. When determining which new members to add, it is suggest you follow a screening process to ensure they are a good fit for the group.

Develop a set of screening questions and criteria that you, as the group leader, will use to choose the members of the group. Begin with demographics questions (name, age, address, presenting issue, etc.) There should be a minimum of 10 screening questions, not including the demographics questions.

Write a 750-word paper that describes the criteria that you as the leader will use to choose the members for the group. Include the screening questions in your paper. Use a minimum of three scholarly references in addition to the course textbook to support the findings.

Week 6

Assignment #3: PCN-520 Group Design Part Four: Group Issues and Summary (Obj. 6.1 and 6.2)
Imagine your group has had the opportunity to meet for at least two sessions. Over the two group sessions, three challenging issues arise. Choose three scenarios from the following list that are realistic to your group type.

Sexual abuse
Homosexuality
Religious preferences
Abortion
Use of illegal drugs
Drinking and driving
Write a 1,500-word summary that includes the following:

A description of the selected issues
Details about how the issues were manifested in the group sessions. For example, someone states he/she is uncomfortable discussing the topic and/or being a part of the group.
Details about how you would handle the situations
Week 8

Write a 1,000-word personal reflection paper summarizing the following:

Most significant things you learned about group counseling in this course
Most significant things you learned about yourself as a potential group leader
Specific skills and experiences that you believe you need to develop in order to be a competent group counselor, based on your current strengths, weaknesses, and prior experience
Your areas of greatest confidence and areas of opportunity when you think about leading counseling groups
Which theoretical basis you are most drawn to and why
Types of groups you might enjoy leading in your future career as a counselor
