“Politics and the English Language,” George Orwell In your writing exercise (three paragraphs),
use one of the examples of “bad English” triggered by Orwell’s writing and do the following:
● Identify and describe a particular “bad habit,” “trick,” “swindle,” or “perversion” of the English language that Orwell does not include in his essay, but that you find particularly troubling as a reader, writer, and speaker of the English language. Referring to your examples, you may want to explain how your choice can be understood in context or in its various contexts. Keep in mind – Orwell is only a jumping-off point; you are not required to refer to him in this exercise.
● Explain why your choice is offensive to you, but not all readers. Dig into your personal relationship with the English language and how it differs from others around you! In other words, given how problematic you find your choice to be, why is it that you think it continues to be in usage? ● Explain how this example is more than just an instance of bad writing. Orwell connects “bad English” to thinking, politics, and culture – what connections might you make?
