Explain principles of care for clients with oncological disorders

I was able to learn more about oncological disorders, and how individuals involved are being affected. I learnt different ways of treatment, nursing interventions, and various ways to prevent cancer during this class. While providing care for patients with oncological disorders, health care professionals should be able to manage the patients’ symptoms, give support needed to the patient and the family, and perform assessment required to understand the disease and treatment plan. Reinforcing teaching regarding disease process and treatment, also, providing information as appropriate about dying while being honest and not giving false hope to the patients as we provide emotional support so that they can have an understanding on what is happening in their lives. Providing nonpharmacological measures can be helpful while giving care to patients with oncological disorders since it promotes relaxation and helps to refocus attention. Being aware of the patient condition while under treatment is vital because it gives providers a chance to determine if the patient is supposed to be referred to the hospice program if needed to provide support in meeting physical, and emotional needs of the patient and to supplement the care that is being given. (Ignatavicius et al.,2018)

Identify components of safe and effective nursing care for clients experiencing fluid and electrolytes imbalances

I learnt how fluids and electrolytes are important in the body, risk factors of fluids and electrolytes imbalances, signs, and symptoms of these imbalances, and ways to prevent fluid and electrolytes imbalances. Patients with fluid and electrolyte imbalances, their input and output should be monitored and note decreased output, oral fluids should be administered with caution and a 24-hour schedule fluid intake if fluids are restricted, and weighing the patient daily is important to observe for sudden weight for patients with fluid overload.

Describe strategies for safe, effective, multidimensional nursing care for clients with acid-base imbalance

During the acid-base imbalances I was able to learn the two abnormalities of acid base imbalance such as acidosis whereby the blood has too much acid and too little base resulting in decrease in in blood PH, and alkalosis whereby the blood has too much base and too little acid resulting in an increase in PH. Motoring and graph serial ABGs is vital for the patient experiencing acid- base imbalances to evaluate therapy needs and effectiveness, testing and monitoring for urine PH is important because kidney attempt to compensate for acidosis by excreting excess hydrogen in the form of weak acids and ammonia.

Select appropriate nursing interventions for clients with upper gastrointestinal disorders

I learnt different nursing interventions for patient with upper gastrointestinal disorders such as observing and recording stool frequency, characteristics, amount, and precipitating factors, promoting bed rest as rest reduces intestinal motility, instructing the patient to remain upright position for al least 2 hours after eating which is helpful in controlling reflux, reviewing the disease, cause and effect relationship of factors that precipitate symptoms and finding ways to reduce factors is very important when it comes to treatment, encouraging the patient to increase dietary intake of fiber to promote comfortable elimination, and encouraging the patient to do exercise regularly to stimulate intestinal activity .

Select appropriate nursing interventions for clients with lower gastrointestinal disorders

I also learnt different nursing interventions for patients with lower gastrointestinal disorders such as being able to identify and restricting foods and fluids that cause diarrhea, exploring the patient’s daily nutritional intake and food habits to create a baseline of the client’s nutritional status and his preferences, referring the patient with lower intestinal disorder to the dietician is vital for more specialized care in terms of nutrition.

Evaluate responses to nursing interventions for clients with endocrine disorders

I was able to learn different types of endocrine disorders such hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, graves’ disease, and osteoporosis. Checking for vital signs is very important when proving care to patients with endocrine disorder, auscultating heart sounds to make sure that no adventitious sound that is heard during the assessment process with the patient, No signs or episodes of bleeding noted after surgery, and patient able to participate in the plan of care.

Explain the principles of care for clients with oncological disorders.

I achieved this course competency by first identifying the different types of cancer; I then identified the multidisciplinary team involved in the care of the clients. I then identified the medical therapies for oncological disorders. One new knowledge gained related to this competence is the Tele-oncology models in the provision of care in rural centers (Nickel, 2020). This new knowledge will impact my nursing practice by providing easy access to the nurses to the patients.

Identify components of safe and effective nursing care for clients experiencing fluid and electrolyte imbalances.

I achieved this course competence by discussing the various electrolytes and functions of fluids in the body and their normal quantities. I then identified the various causes of fluid and electrolyte imbalances. I then identified the signs and symptoms of fluid and electrolyte imbalances before identifying the priority nursing diagnoses and the specific interventions for the clients. New knowledge gained during this course competence is that the various forms of intravenous solutions help correct different types of fluid and electrolyte imbalances.

Describe strategies for safe, effective multidimensional nursing care for clients with acid-base imbalances

I achieved this course competence by first identifying the various forms of acid-base imbalances and how they affect the body. I then discussed the various strategies for nursing care for clients with imbalances. New knowledge gained during this course competence is that arterial blood gases are preferred in identifying acid-base imbalances in the body (Silva, 2021). This knowledge will impact nursing practice because nurses can easily determine what is going on with the patient by using ABG results.

Select Appropriate nursing interventions for clients with upper gastrointestinal disorders

I achieved this course competence by first identifying the various upper gastrointestinal disorders, their causes, pathophysiology, and manifestation. I then identified the priority nursing diagnoses, set the care goals, and then selected the appropriate nursing interventions.

Select Appropriate nursing interventions for clients with lower gastrointestinal disorders

I first identified the anatomy and physiology of the lower gastrointestinal system. I then identified the disorders that affect the system. I also discussed the causes, pathophysiology, and manifestation of the disorders. I then identified the priority nursing diagnoses, set the goals, and then selected the appropriate nursing interventions.

Evaluate responses to nursing interventions for clients with endocrine disorders

I first identified the priority nursing diagnoses for clients with endocrine disorders, established the goal of care, and then identified the appropriate nursing interventions. After implementing the interventions, I then evaluated them to confirm whether they achieved the set goals. New knowledge gained during this course competence is that there are various endocrine disorders, and they all require different nursing interventions (Urden, 2019). This will help impact the nursing practice by ensuring nursing interventions are made specifically according to an endocrine disorder.
